Coach KG, Scott & Mel are the owners of URT. They bought the gym in early 2020, and after getting through the COVID period, have gone from strength to strength! Here’s a little intro on all of the coaches, but meeting them in person is much better!
KG was born and raised in Townsville, and while he has lived in Southern Queensland for a couple of sporadic years here and there, he keeps coming back to his home, Townsville. KG grew up playing soccer, tennis, and BMX, and has also socially played union, NRL, touch & oztag. Gaming through his later teens threw his health into disarray, and just after he turned 19, started going to the gym consistently. This led him to completing his Certificate 3 & 4 in Fitness in 2011, after which he did some work as a personal trainer around local Townsville gyms. This didn’t quite sate his hunger for knowledge, so he pushed on to do his Bachelor of Sports and Exercise Science in 2014. Throughout his degree he worked at the original URT as a coach with Scott (and began doing some Powerlifting). After a 12 month break to do a Diploma of Surveying, he ended up coming back to Townsville and his main gym, URT. Since buying the gym with Scott and Mel pre-COVID, he has studied Sports Nutrition to add to the team’s skill-set and help clients with their results. His mantra can be distilled down to: technique is #1, and intensity is #2. Short, sweet, and results driven.

Mel is what most people would call a ‘super mum’, she was born in Victoria, and in 2013 moved to Townsville with her partner and 4 kids! She loves the warm weather and lifestyle that the climate provides, and after a couple of years living in Townsville, she embraced the cult-like obsession of Crossfit to get fit. She found out quickly what it was like to start at the bottom, and through hard work and consistency has moulded herself into the fit specimen that she is today! After that climb up the fitness ladder she found that she wanted to help other people get that sense of accomplishment and confidence that she experienced, which she wasn’t going to be able to do in her past occupation in a government managerial role. This epiphany led into her journey as a coach, so she went on to study as a personal trainer. It took a couple of years for the stars to align, and then she landed her first role as a gym manager and coach for URT. Fast forward 5 years and she is still here and now a co-owner of URT as well. She loves to push clients to achieve things that they didn’t think they could do, particularly when it comes to high-intensity training.
Certificate 3 & 4 in Fitness
Scott was born in Portland, Victoria but moved to Charters Towers, North Queensland when he was four years old. Scott grew up with four older brothers and a love for sport, playing pretty much everything. Since graduating from university with a Bachelor of Exercise Physiology, Scott has had a wide range of roles, including things like community health promotion, chronic disease management, strength and conditioning, injury management/rehabilitation, athletic development, and managing an Exercise Physiology clinic and gym. Scott originally started work with KG at URT in 2014, so you could say he’s one of the OG’s with KG. Scott is a sucker for study punishment, and has recently graduated from JCU as a Physiotherapist!
Scott takes a very science-based approach to his coaching. If he had to pick his favourite populations to coach, it would be in youth strength development, and getting the oldies lifting weights and moving well. He coaches and programs by the mantra, ‘Exercise is medicine, sustainability is key, train to improve, not destroy yourself.’ He believes that in the long list of amazing things that exercise does for us, burning calories is one of the least impressive.

John’s love for fitness began during his childhood in Dysart, Central Queensland, where his passion for sports led him to become a qualified coach. During his tennis career, he learned to coach players of all skills and ages (including Scott in his younger years) while he improved his coaching skills. While pursuing a Bachelor in Civil Engineering, John’s passion for fitness grew. While engineering and fitness might seem like an odd fit, for John, it's all about building a strong, functional, and practical foundation for whatever challenge or situation arises. With over 10 years of experience, he’s designed and led bootcamps, group sessions, and one-on-one training, helping people of all ages and fitness levels achieve strength, functionality, and mobility.

Brayden was born in Echuca Victoria, but in 2007 his family moved to Mount Isa, QLD, before making his way to Townsville in 2019. Sport and exercise has always been a large part of his life, participating in competitive swimming, triathlons and field hockey, so it’s safe to say endurance is his preference. He is currently in the final year of his dual Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science and Psychological Science. Like Kurt, Brayden was picked up by URT after doing his placement here, and has become a morning staple for our clients. When it comes to coaching mentality, he aims to incorporate both mental and physical components in his delivery and prescription, and drives home that strength and conditioning are both important for your overall health and wellbeing.
Bachelor of Sports & Exercise Science + Psychological Science (5th year)
Born in NSW, but raised in Tennant Creek, a remote town in the Northern Territory, from the age of 1. She finished her schooling at a boarding school in Charters Towers from Grade 10 onwards, and after finishing high school, came to Townsville to do her Bachelors in Nursing, and post-grad in Critical Care Nursing (ED).
Arnie first trained as a client at URT in 2014 whilst still in university. This is when she first developed her love of fitness, and in 2022 (after all of her nursing study) decided to complete her Certificate 3 & 4 in Fitness in 2022, and has been a coach at URT ever since! She loves strength training, and HIIT workouts, and her nursing and fitness combination mean that she prioritises preventative health care, which is the best way to stay out of an already overburdened healthcare system.
